Do we need a separate Anti Corruption day?
9th Dec happens to be anti corruption day wherein more than 100 officials were caught in the act in just one Indian city. The drive against corruption has to be sustained and 24*7 all thru the year and deterrent punishment needs to be meted out quickly. Wish all media (print and electronic) join hands on this day to run awareness campaign and provide useful info for whistleblowing or to set up a trap for corrupt officials. There are many states in India where Lok Ayukta is not appointed or people are not aware of such provision. It is a different matter that the cases booked by Lok Ayukta are not acted upon by government.
The most important thing is to distinguish act committed by briber with profit in mind (eg getting a road contract) and the other cases where normal public forced to part with money even for basic services (eg RTO, Donation to schools / colleges even with high marks) without which they would be made to run around on some pretext or other. In the second case, the official accepting bribe to be punished and public should be encouraged to come forward with evidences to root out corruption by exempting them from bribing offence. Quick legislation of clsss action to cover all areas in addition to investor protection will help in empowering people to root out this menace.
